Audio-visual editing in 2 OR 3 THINGS I KNOW ABOUT HER by Jean-Luc Godard

In 1966, Jean-Luc Godard made 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her, a feature-length film at the crossroads between fiction film, sociological documentary and philosophical treatise. The "her" of the title denotes at the same time the film’s protagonist, Juliette, the actress playing her, Marina Vlady, and the Parisian region, which at the time was subject to wide-sweeping urban modernisation driven by the Gaullist government.

In this excerpt, the relationships between the sounds themselves, and between sound and image, underpin the questions spoken by the voice-over concerning his relationship with other people and the world.

The play on variations of volume and, the disjunctions and links between the in-screen and "off" sounds creates a soundscape that expresses the immersion of a consciousness in the world.
