The voice-over is nondiegetic. Looking in on the scene, the voice-over in The Virtuous Scoundrel, spoken by the filmmaker himself, offers some general truths that clearly seem to be exemplified by the character. Yet, the filmmaker does not belong to the story world, or, in other words, the diegesis. The effect produced is one of the omniscient scriptwriter who relishes the fact that he knows in advance what will happen to his characters. And who, in a semblance of dialogue with the spectator, poses as a writer of fables or a moralist.
