This sound intrusion is a way of confirming the findings of the graphology expert called in by the police: his conclusions on the suspect’s unhinged personality seem to materialise under our eyes when the chubby-faced man ("behind a mask of indolence and inertia", as dictated by the graphologist) grimaces in front of his mirror and takes on a disturbing expression ("an obvious tendency to madness").

There is a clear analogy between what the voice-over says and what the suspect’s face expresses. The suspect seems to be demonstrating a textbook case, almost too directly and literally: could this be a form of ironic derision by the suspect (or Fritz Lang)?
