In addition to the ambient sound of the shower’s running water comes the increasingly loud screeching of birds (visually echoed in the bird patterns on the tiles). Initially objective, the sound becomes subjective, as if the viewer were slipping into the character’s troubled inner world. The confined space of a shower cubicle opens out with the suggestion of an immense forest. Alex has just committed a serious act: coupled with the temporarily underexposed image, the relative "savagery" of the birds’ cries, which have no rational justification in the soundscape, suggests that he is confronting his inner demons. Alex is unable to protect himself from the outside world. The shower that was meant to “cleanse” him of his act becomes the theatre of his anguish.
